Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena - Performance

"Combined with a Geforce GTX 285 only the Athlon 64 4000+ delivers a framerate that isn't absolutely smooth, but the X2 5000+ is already fast enough to run Assault on Dark Athena over 40 fps.

The transition form a dual- to a quad-core processor delivers an increase in performance by about 10 percent only and thus is almost negligible."

Yay, the Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena trailer is out! Embedding is disabled for now, but I'll put it up here once it works. Until then, follow the link below to check it out in all its glory.

I'm responsible for all the frapsing of the footage, and gameplay, but didn't do the cutting. Yay, PR! :)

Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena - Preview

"The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is quickly shooting to the top of our list of most-anticipated titles of 2009.

Playing Escape from Butcher Bay again, remade for the Xbox 360 is exciting in its own right, and the promise of new adventures, new multiplayer modes, new finishing moves and the lot is just a huge pile of icing on the cake."
Chances are, that any screenshot you'll see from the new campaign was taken by me, like the above two :)

Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is almost done

Seemingly forever ago, Vivendi and developer Starbreeze announced The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, a next-gen remake of their cult hit Xbox game, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. But after that announcement, the game seemingly dropped off of the radar. The general consensus among gamers was that it had been quietly cancelled. I can tell you today, happily, that it is still coming along and seems to be closer to release than you'd think.

I contacted Starbreeze CEO Johan Kristiansson through e-mail, and he informed me that

"We are certianly working on it, and we are almost done actually and the game looks great. We are just waiting for the marketing campaign to get started now."

He didn't give me a time frame for release, but it seems like it will hopefully be out sooner rather than later.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena includes the full single-player campaign from Escape from Butcher Bay along with a brand new single-player campaign as well as brand new multiplayer modes. It is coming out for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 sometime this year.

Starbreeze interviewed

What can you tell us about a Darkness sequel, which was “announced” at Comic Con last week?

- [RN] The Darkness 2 is only a rumor at this point, and there’s no substance to that rumor. What we like you to report on however, is Chronicles of Riddick – The Assault on Dark Athena. There were rumors that it’s been cancelled, but that is not true. It’s alive and well!

Do you focus a lot on the scores, like on Metacritic and Game Rankings?

- [JA] Yes, and that is very important nowadays because it sometimes happens that publishers connect bonus deals to the scores a game gets on Game Rankings and such. The latest I heard is that it’s connected to the five biggest reviews, if you pass a certain score. And I think that is pretty damn interesting.

Because, it is a relatively good way to measure a game, and probably better, from a developers perspective, than sales figures, which you don’t have any control over. A developer can control the score and review a game gets relatively good, and reviewers tend to reward innovation. I like that way of thinking about it, to look more at actual reviews than sales figures.
