The Prestige - 8.1
The Prestige, is a tale about a friendship that turn into a rivalry. It's about two magicians who compete against each other, and when one of them performs his ultimate trick, the other one risk everything to find out the secret of that trick. But the more he tries to figure it out, the more it seems like it wasn't a trick at all.
Great atmosphere with a really compelling story that makes you take a moment and think about it afterwards. The only set back is one major flaw in the story. I can't reveal it here since it would spoil the movie, but let's just say it was a little too much fantasy for my taste.
Children of Men - 8.2
A surreal dystopian future, yet very believable. 18 years have passed since the last human child was born, and mankind has realized it's on the verge to extinction. The world have turned out to a world of chaos, with only a few that still remains civilized. It's as much about a Big Brother society as it is about the war on terror.
To be honest, the first fifth of the movie didn't seem appealing to me at all. Although very well made, it was really a gray portrait of a future London, and it was progressing at a really slow tempo. But if one just gives this movie a chance, one will be pleasantly suprised. Also, I couldn't help but think of Half-Life 2 when watching this movie. They share plenty of resemblances.
Pan's Labyrinth - 8.5
The trailer for this movie makes it look like a sugar sweet fairy tale story, that could be enjoyed by the whole family, but that's not the case. This is actually one of the most brutal movies I've ever seen. It's the story about a little girl and her pregnant mother who travels together to live with the new husband, a fascist military officer.
It all takes place in 1944, a rural area of Spain, and the story gives me alot of vibes from Alice in Wonderland and the Grimm's Fairy Tales. It's not without reason this movie have been nominated for 6 oscars, and 49 other awards, aswell as they've already won 15 awards, which best costume, cinematography and foreign film is among them.
